Recognizing that rural communities across West Virginia faced critical nursing shortages, WVJC created a statewide system of online/hybrid Nursing programs coupled with Mobile Nursing Labs (MNLs), a fleet of three 38-foot RVs equipped with fully functioning patient care rooms. These mobile labs bring high-fidelity simulations directly to students, eliminating barriers of geography and access. By leveraging both technology and mobility, WVJC has enabled aspiring nurses to complete their training in less than two years and transition quickly into hospitals in need.

This innovation would not be possible without WVJC’s close collaborations with employers. Partnerships with the Vandalia Health System, also known as the Mon Health System and CAMC, ensure that students not only receive their clinical training in real hospital environments but also enter into tuition assistance programs tied to employment commitments. The result is a seamless bridge from classroom to career: students graduate ready to step into the workforce, already familiar with the hospitals they will serve.

WVJC has also expanded collaboration into new, forward-thinking areas. In 2024, the college partnered with Moodr Health to integrate mental health resources into its Nursing programs. Recognizing the intense pressures faced by nursing students, WVJC launched a pilot program at its Charleston campus to provide assessments, treatment, and ongoing support. This investment in student well-being demonstrates WVJC’s holistic approach, understanding that preparing effective nurses means addressing both academic and emotional resilience.

Listening has become a defining strategy for WVJC’s leadership. Rather than dictating what programs should look like, they engage in constant dialogue with employer partners, asking where shortages are most acute and what skills are most urgently needed. This proactive approach has already sparked the development of WVJC’s next program: a Respiratory Therapy online/hybrid degree. By anticipating needs and creating solutions in partnership with employers, WVJC continues to expand its impact beyond nursing into other critical healthcare fields.

The outcomes speak for themselves. Students from WVJC’s Nursing programs are graduating, passing the NCLEX-RN exam, and entering the workforce across regions including Elkins, Beckley, Huntington, Martinsburg, and Parkersburg. Rural hospitals that once struggled to recruit nurses now benefit from a steady pipeline of skilled, committed graduates. Students who once thought nursing school was out of reach now see a tangible path to a career without leaving their communities.
