CECU Submits Comments at Department of Education Hearing on Regulatory Reform

10/4/2017

October 4, 2017 – Arlington, Va. – Today, Career Education Colleges and Universities president & CEO Steve Gunderson delivered testimony to the Department of Education at a public hearing on the topic of federal regulatory reform.

“Career education represents an important option for students and workers as innovations have dramatically changed the delivery of academic programs,” said Gunderson. “About 2.3 million students are engaged in postsecondary education in our sectors schools, and these students are impacted daily by the maze of regulations that define how a school serves their academic and career learning. We applaud the department for their commitment to review, revise or reduce these regulations that impede the delivery of access and opportunity to our students, and we stand ready to work with you in further review of these regulations.”
CECU submitted formal comments to the Department of Education in September addressing 22 specific regulations in need of review and reform. The report was produced to identify rules and requirements that place undue burdens on students, families and institutions of higher education.

“CECU and our member institutions welcome a broad discussion on federal education policy and how to best provide for students’ academic and career education needs. America’s students deserve a higher education landscape that provides diverse opportunities to prepare individuals with the necessary skills they will need to succeed in life,” said Gunderson.

The Department of Education’s hearing and call for comments is a part of the Trump administration’s regulatory reform effort outlined in an executive order issued in February that required all federal agencies to begin identifying burdensome regulations to eliminate.
