CECU Statement On Forced Shutdown Of Career Point College

10/18/2016

October 18, 2016 – Washington, DC – The below statement can be attributed to CECU president and CEO Steve Gunderson following actions by the U.S. Department of Education that forced the shutdown of Career Point College:
“When will this end?  When will someone in this Department stop the incredible assault on career schools, which puts thousands of students on the streets with debt and no degree, while literally destroying the lifetime work and investment of families serving their community’s workforce needs?

“In this case, when the school discovered a discrepancy, they voluntarily reported it to the U.S. Department of Education.  They had already repaid half of the funds and had in place a plan to complete the repayment by January.  The regional office again worked with the school, only to have Washington take a hostile approach – rejecting the solution and imposing letters of credit no one could ever match in today’s world.

“Schools are being intentionally closed.  Students’ career hopes are destroyed.  Taxpayer are faced with new and unnecessary costs.  Forty-five percent of the students enrolled in our schools are African American or Hispanic.  Consider the incredible destruction to these communities by such bureaucratic hostility and arrogance.”
