CECU Statement on Chairman Alexander’s HEA Reauthorization Proposal
Following Chairman Lamar Alexander’s release of eight bipartisan bills to rewrite parts of the Higher Education Act, Steve Gunderson, President and CEO of Career Education Colleges and Universities, released the following statement:
​
“Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act is one of the most important items this Congress can accomplish. While everything in higher education has changed since the last reauthorization, the law underpinning higher education remains stuck in the past.”
 
You Should Know…the Rest of the Story!
First, you should know that no sector has done more since the publication of the three-year cohort default rates to improve their outcomes than our sector. The proprietary sector rate fell from 22.7% to the current rate of 15.2%, a 33% decrease from the 2009 rate.
 
Alexander's HEA plan sparks criticism but also White House praise - POLITICO
Steve Gunderson, the head of Career Education Colleges and Universities, which represents for-profit colleges, praised Alexander’s proposal, especially the expansion of Pell Grants for short-term programs. “As the colleges and universities exclusively focused on career skills and workforce preparation, we stand ready to work with students to use these grants to make as many Americans career ready and future proof as possible,” Gunderson said in a statement.

Alexander Introduces Long-Term Solution to Fund Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Serving Institutions
Senate education committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today introduced a long-term solution to fund Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other Minority Serving Institutions as part of a legislative package of eight bipartisan higher education proposals drafted by 35 Senators — 20 Democrat, 15 Republican.

Thursday afternoon, Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) made good on one of his landmark legislative initiatives when he took to the Senate floor to propose a narrow reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) that focuses largely on simplifying the FAFSA.

Durbin, Lee Lead Congressional Effort To Overturn Devos Borrower Defense Rule
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Representative Susie Lee (D-NV-03) today led the introduction of a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution of disapproval on Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ rewritten borrower defense rule that gutted essential protections for student borrowers and taxpayers.
 
Borrower Defense to Repayment Rule 3.0 – Part II: Student Relief – Cooley ED
This article will focus on the impact of the new rule on those for whom the statute was originally intended to protect – Direct Loan borrowers – and more specifically the bases for borrower defense claims and how those claims will be processed. All of these new rules will become effective on July 1, 2020.
