Today, the outstanding federal student loan portfolio is $1.51 trillion. The Direct Loan (DL) portfolio now represents 82 percent of the outstanding loan portfolio while the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) portfolio represents 17 percent.

In this paper, I examine whether colleges at risk of federal sanctions due to high CDRs respond by reducing living allowances in an effort to limit borrowing and if student debt burdens decrease after a college receives a high default rate.
