CECU Calls upon Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition to stop their False Campaign

9/29/2017

September 29, 2017 - Arlington, Va. - Career Education Colleges & Universities president and CEO Steven Gunderson today called upon the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition to stop their false and misleading attack on career education colleges.  In making the call, Gunderson pointed out that, “The use of false information to make such charges serves no one’s best interests, and, it is time you stop misleading students!”
Gunderson went on to say, “We never criticize any other sector of higher education.  But in choosing to announce your campaign at the Baltimore City Community College you used a college with retention rates, graduation rates and earnings after college that are all significantly lower than the state’s postsecondary career colleges.”

Research from The Chronicle of Higher Education’s College Completion website shows that in Maryland, the 2-year proprietary schools have a 61 percent graduation rate, while the 2-year public schools have a 14 percent graduation rate.  Further, data from the U.S. Department of Education shows that Baltimore City Community College, the location of the Consumer Groups announcement, has only a 6 percent graduation rate.

“Career education plays an important role in Maryland’s higher education landscape. We must stop the lies.  We all need to work together to best serve the specific interests of each Maryland student.  For those seeking career education our sector continues to provide accelerated and focused academic programs leading to real careers with real salaries and a real chance at a place in America’s middle class.”
