Steve Gunderson, President and CEO of Career Education Colleges & Universities, today applauded a judge’s ruling that President Obama's Department of Education failed "to consider various categories of relevant evidence” in reviewing ACICS. “All we have ever asked for is due process and fairness,” he said. “This ruling makes clear the process used in revoking ACICS recognition was not complete and fair. We now hope the current Secretary will recognize the need to work with ACICS, the schools impacted by this ruling to find a path that keeps students in school and on their way to achieving career skills.” Gunderson pointed out that no less than 100 schools serving over 100,000 student are still seeking new accreditation as a result of the Departments ruling in 2016. “No credible public policy puts over 100,000 students on the street with debt and no degree,” he said.
But Gunderson also looked at long-term policy and expressed hope this ruling would create a different environment going forward. “Yes, our sector has had bad schools like every sector of higher education,” Gunderson shared. “But it is time that everyone across the political spectrum stop, step back, and look for ways to work together to establish public policies that treat all sectors of higher education on a fair and equal basis. The ideological wars must end! Because the only real loser in these battles is the students we all seek to serve. We need regulations; federal legislation; and Department administration that are sufficiently fair and equitable that they can stand the test of time regardless of which party is in power.” For more information, contact Clay Sutton at clay.sutton@career.org.
