Watch the House Committee on Education and Labor markup of the College Affordability Act, a bill from House Democrats seeking to update the Higher Education Act. The markup is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. eastern today.

Today, the Committee will markup the College Affordability Act (H.R. 4674) – a responsible, comprehensive overhaul of our higher education system that would lower the cost of college, improve the quality of higher education, and expand opportunity for students from all backgrounds.

A study presented recently at a Brookings Institution annual conference suggests that one popular idea — free community college — would actually lead to slightly lower college completion, in part because financially challenged students are already well-served by federal aid such as Pell Grants, and because the offer of free two-year degrees might draw students away from four-year programs.
