Board of Nursing begins to terminate unaccredited schools – The Ledger
In total, 25 programs are in the process of being terminated because they did not meet the July 1 deadline. All of the programs were private, for-profit and opened since 2009 after the state relaxed the Board of Nursing’s requirements for opening a new school.
 
What’s changed in US News’ 2020 college rankings? – Education Dive
U.S. News & World Report made several changes to its annual college rankings that dropped Monday. Those include ranking schools based on their contributions to underrepresented students’ social mobility and rewarding institutions for graduating first-generation students.

The U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs has canceled its contract with a California state agency that approves colleges—like San Luis Obispo’s Cal Poly—to receive GI Bill funds, after a lengthy dispute over how to regulate for-profit and out-of-state schools.

Just a few months ago, California’s Democratic-controlled legislature seemed poised to pass the nation’s toughest restrictions on for-profit colleges. School owners publicly fretted that they’d have to shut down.

​Veterans for Career Education (VCE)
Not every military veteran wants to attend a traditional college and university. The field of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is important. Veterans should be applauded for choosing these technical careers and the schools that provide the education in the skilled professions.
 
Unfortunately, some politicians want to restrict choice or outright eliminate opportunities for veterans attending career, tech and trade schools that are not state-run or nonprofit universities.

House Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Help Working Students Access Financial Aid – NASFAA
A bipartisan group of representatives introduced a bill late last month to help students who are working and/or have dependents access financial aid by extending students’ lifetime Pell Grant eligibility and raising the allowable income threshold for Title IV aid.
 
Student-loan behemoth tightens its ties to Trump and DeVos – Politico
The company that rejected all but 1 percent of applicants for a popular federal student-loan forgiveness plan is beefing up its already close ties to President Donald Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos as it competes for a new contract.

End Legacy College Admissions – The New York Times
Preferential treatment for legacy admissions is anti-meritocratic, inhibits social mobility and helps perpetuate a de facto class system. In short, it is an engine of inequity.
