FAQ
Hill Day Frequently Asked Questions
Q) Who can attend the Hill Day Polity Meeting on March 23?
A) All are welcome to register and attend the policy meeting. Registration is complimentary for all CECU institutions and their staff and available here.
Q) Who, from my institution should attend the Congressional appointments on March 24-25?
A) These meetings are intended to advocate for the postsecondary career education sector as well as your individual institutions. We encourage your leadership team to establish the best way to articulate the messaging from your institutions and who best represents for that message. This can include the leadership team, campus professionals, students, and graduates. Be prepared to talk about the students you teach, the professions you train and the communities you serve.
Q) Who, from my institution should attend “Advocacy 101: Making the Most of Your Meetings with Lawmakers”?
A) Advocacy 101 is set up to walk newer attendees through the steps of a Congressional meeting. Since limited time is available for the individual appointments on March 24-25, these meetings need to be organized and concise. The CECU staff will go over proper procedures, talking points and answer questions in a more open forum to any registrant who wishes to attend Advocacy 101.
Q) Why is space limited for Congressional appointments on Wednesday and Thursday?
A) Congressional meetings are more productive when meeting group size is limited. Smaller group sizes tend to facilitate more substantive discussions and provide an opportunity for participants to speak.
Q) Can I attend only one day?
A) Participation in Congressional meetings is not required. Anyone unable to participate in Congressional meetings on Wednesday, March 24, and Thursday, March 25, can still attend the advocacy and policy briefing on Tuesday, March 23. However, attendance on Tuesday, March 23, is required for anyone participating in Congressional meetings on March 24 and 25.
Q) How will I meet with my members of Congress virtually?
A) CECU Hill Day participants will virtually meet with their Congress members or staff via video (Zoom, Microsoft teams, etc.) or telephone conference. The Congressional office has the final say on which method they prefer, so be sure to expect a mix between telephone and video conference calls throughout the day.
Q) Will I meet with my members of Congress personally?
A) Possibly, but this varies from meeting to meeting. Members of Congress have hectic schedules. Their time is scheduled down to the minute between votes, committee hearings, and discussions with other constituents. They may spend the whole meeting with you, two minutes, or none at all. We always request that the Congress member be present at the meeting, but you may also meet with staff experts on the issues that are influential in helping members develop their positions.
Q) Do I make my own appointments?
A) No, we will handle that for you. The CECU Government Relations team will match your institution's zip code against the Congressional database to request your elected officials' appointments.
