2023 CFO and Business Officer Symposium The CFO and Business Officer Symposium has been designed at the request of school leaders looking for additional resources surrounding all things accounting, finance, and compliance at their institutions. The symposium is open to CECU members and prospective members. Who should register: CFOs, business and financial officers, accountants, financial analysts, treasurers, controllers, investors, etc. Continuing education: All attendees will receive continuing education credits for the duration of the event. This event has been submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors to be recognized by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) for continuing professional education credits in accordance with nationally recognized standards. The Symposium has been submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. Once approved, the event will be certified for up to 7 hours of CPE credits. In compliance with the standards set by the National Registry of CPE Sponsors, this page will be updated with all course material and policy standards. Discussions will ensue on how to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and innovations as well as updates on policies and regulations affecting our schools. Program Level: Overview Program Prerequisites: None Advanced Preparation Needed: None Who should attend the event: CFOs, business and financial officers, accountants, financial analysts, treasurers, controllers, investors, etc. Attendance Policy For Group Internet Based webinars, attendance and participation will be monitored electronically via zoom’s reporting tools. The name and email address of each registrant, as well as the time they entered the meeting and the time they left it, will be documented. Additionally, polling queues will be deployed during the course of each session to gauge and monitor participation and activity from all attendees. The course proctor (CECU staff) will employ at least three polls per CPE credit for attendance checks. Attendees must complete at least three such attendance checks during each 50-minute increment. These mechanisms will be of sufficient frequency and lack predictability. The participants’ responses to such interactive elements will be recorded electronically by the webinar platform. Brian Fitzpatrick Senior Vice President – Analytics Tuition Options Brian Fitzpatrick is Senior Vice President - Analytics. Brian joined Tuition Options in 2009 and is responsible for overseeing the company’s portfolio analytics team, conducting loan loss reserve analytics for school client portfolios and credit facility financing. Brian consults with schools on best practice guidance and implementation for their institutional loan program policies and operations. He graduated from James Madison University with a degree in Finance and has an MBA from The University of San Diego. Russell Gibson, CPA Vice President of Finance Centura College, Aviation Institute of Maintenance, Tidewater Tech Russell Gibson is an accomplished finance and accounting executive with over 25 years of leadership experience as a Controller and CFO in multiple industries including higher education, publishing, media, hospitality and manufacturing. Russell joined the organization in 2021 as the Director of Finance and Accounting and was promoted to Vice President of Finance in 2022. He oversees all accounting and finance functions across 20 campuses including budgeting, student payment systems, payroll, regulatory reporting, purchasing, and internal controls. As a member of the Executive Team he provides strategic financial insights to improve operational efficiencies. Areas of expertise include financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, expense management, internal controls, audit, and compliance. Russell received his bachelor’s degree in Accounting and later earned an MBA in Finance from Rutgers University. He is also a CPA and is a Certified Professional Coach. Eileen Keller, CPA Partner SST Accountants & Consultants Eileen has 25 years public accounting experience and is nationally known for her specialization in audit and accounting services for career schools and colleges. In addition to her role as partner, she serves as the firm’s director of career services overseeing the management of career school audit and engagements. Eileen enjoys helping clients manage the many financial and compliance-related issues they face every day. Dave McClintock, CPA Managing Director McClintock & Associates, PC Dave began serving as Managing Director in 2017 and is focused on providing high value client service while maintaining employee wellness. Clients appreciate Dave’s advice related to the 90/10 calculation, composite score projections and when considering acquisitions in the industry. He is frequently requested or selected to present at industry conferences on a wide variety of topics. During the first quarter of 2022, Dave was chosen to be the first advisor for Negotiated Rulemaking who was selected due to experience auditing institutions that participate in Title IV. He filled that non-voting role for the Institutional and Programmatic Eligibility Committee which tackled 90/10, Gainful Employment and Change in Ownership along with other key topics. Prior to joining McClintock & Associates, Dave held various positions in the investment industry, most recently as an analyst for a large fund of hedge funds. Michael Wherry Director McClintock & Associates, PC Michael is a Director within our Audit Department and has over three decades of experience in the public sector. Michael spends his time almost exclusively in providing services to post-secondary educational institutions which include for-profit and non-profit entities to ensure audit and compliance regulations are properly followed. A Certified Public Accountant, Michael oversees the completion of annual audits (financial statement and student financial aid). Clients value his views on internal controls and processes, financial reporting under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), proactive solutions for meeting regulatory covenants, interpretation of standards and regulations, and suggestions to minimize compliance findings in student financial aid audits. In addition, Michael provides transaction services for buyers and sellers. Michael has expertise in advising institutions in regard to the composite score ratio, the 90/10 calculation, and the opening balance sheet ratios related to a change of ownership. |
