Predictive Admissions:  The Mindset of the Successful Completer
Onsite Presentation
  • Dr. Scott Fitzgibbon, The Pacific Institute
  • Mike Artim, The Pacific Institute
  • Rex Spaulding, North American Trade Schools
  • Josh Paulsen, Unitek College
With the mounting pressures for completion and placement rates upon our sector, what are we doing to make sure we are enrolling the students that are best suited to achieve both?  Career Colleges have a long history of using intellectual aptitude, whether it be a high school diploma, GED, or some type of math/language/cognitive reasoning entrance test as a baseline for enrollment, but those sources fall well short of assessing the mindset skills that determine whether a student truly has the “stick-to-it-ness” to stay the course.  In pre-employment testing, predictive validity refers to how likely it is for test scores to predict future job performance. Why should it be any different for enrolling students? By modeling after our students who have demonstrated success, we no longer need to worry that good candidates are being denied admission based on an arbitrary standard, and more importantly, we can help ensure we are enrolling the type of student who can be successful in our programs of study. In this session, we will discuss baseline cognitive questions that measure fundamental learning skills, but also the necessity of measuring an applicant’s mindset towards the educational process.

Retention and Graduation is in the HABEs
Pre-recorded Presentation Available in Convention Portal
  • Dr. Scott Fitzgibbon, The Pacific Institute
The more the world changes around our students, the basic tenets of student success and retention stay the same.  It is rarely, if ever, that students do not succeed because of aptitude or the inability to do the work necessary, but rather because of the inability to handle life’s obstacles in pursuit of an education. In order to help our students become all that they can be, the future that is possible needs to become their new normal. Our students have varying beliefs about their ability to succeed, or whether they belong in higher education at all.  Those beliefs are based largely upon past experiences and those beliefs are accompanied by Habits and Attitudes that may or may not be aligned with the Expectations and goals that they have for their education, or for their life. With the proper mindset and a deliberate focus on the HABEs (habits, attitudes, beliefs, and expectations), our students can create the future they intend regardless of the changing times.

Small Schools (1 campus less than 4 programs deep)  Effective Marketing for schools that cant afford the larger advertising corp.  Grass Roots, leveraging employers and other community influencers.
Pre-recorded Presentation Available in Convention Portal
  • Dainah Craft, Indiana Wellness  College
You still must have a CRM, and a effective structured admissions process. Take the open house concept to the next level. Different focus and theme to appeal to appeal to different prospects at every campus open house. Employer open houses, done entirely at the employers location so your potential student can feel what it would be like to work there and talk directly to people in the field.  This would include a structured process for how these events are successfully done to lead to high conversions. Being selective!  This can't be a numbers game anymore - butts in seats don't count.  You must have an objective structured process to do that, and all staff  in the organization should  agree that we enroll graduates, not students. A  simple process that leads to high completion and placements and less withdrawals and liabilities.  Our strategies are effective, low cost and ideal for small schools always struggling for enrollments, or staying at the 1.5 composite score.

Supporting Higher Ed Students, Faculty and Administrators In Difficult Times
Pre-recorded Presentation Available in Convention Portal
  • Moderator: Hester Tinti-Kane, Cengage
  • Jenna Sage, Ultimate Medical Academy
  • Kyle Burdette, Cengage
To cope successfully with a global pandemic and a social movement defying police brutality in our country, higher ed communities have the chance to provide support for both faculty and administrators. And Institutions preparing students for both patient-facing roles and non-clinical, allied health positions have the opportunity to explore new ways to support their students holistically as well. In this session, Jenna Sage, Dean of Career Readiness and Workforce Solutions at Ultimate Medical Academy, will share the approach Ultimate Medical Academy (UMA) is taking during the pandemic. When it comes to supporting students in a holistic way, Cengage has many resources that Institutions tap into. Kyle Burdette, Institutional Account Manager at Cengage, will describe his work with clients, including UMA, who are using these resources successfully.

Designing Your Blended Learning Programs to be Compliant, Efficient, and Effective
Onsite Presentation

  • John Carreon, Chief Compliance Officer & General Counsel, Concorde Career Colleges, Luke Sophinos, CEO, CourseKey
New distance education regulations are going into effect July 1st, 2021. Whether or not your school is clock-hour, clock-to-credit, or credit hour it is likely your LMS and SIS may not be set up properly to accommodate the new regulation. Hear from John Carreon, Chief Compliance Officer at Concorde Career Colleges, and Luke Sophinos, Founder & CEO of CourseKey, as they discuss how to properly design your blended learning programs to meet the new regulations.

The session will focus on:

  • Best practices for designing compliant hybrid learning programs
  • How you can eliminate hours of administrative tasks for your staff and faculty, freeing them up to focus on more important tasks such as student retention and placement.
  • How to connect your SIS and LMS to have real-time visibility into key business metrics

The world needs your talent, not another degree
Pre-recorded Presentation Available in Convention Portal
  • Beth Young, WyoTech || LoveTrades
Education demographics do not align with the requirements of the workplace. Approximately 66% of the positions in the country today (current and unfilled) require two or fewer years of education. The vast majority of workplace demands rest in the future of trades and skilled application, which are underrepresented in local, state, and national conversations. However, talent-based, application-centric learning has dramatically underperformed against baccalaureate urgings and can be directly seen when middle schoolers are urged to declare plans for their post-secondary educational plans. A two-pronged approach that combines a new vocabulary with advocacy is needed to create cohesive public relations in the arena of trades and applied skills.

Transforming Campus Culture with a Game Changing Personality Tool
Onsite Presentation
  • Eric Goodman, Ph.D., Education Affiliates
  • Rebecca Blalock, Education Affiliates
Join us to learn how a game changing personality tool is being used to transform campus culture, build trust and strengthen relationships.  There is enormous evidence in the literature that students who persist and graduate are more likely to be students that develop a connection with at least one employee of the college.  After all, retention is a performance indicator and indirectly measures how valued, respected and connected your students feel. This session will highlight a strategic approach to enhance the student experience by dramatically improving one of the most important interpersonal skills needed today, namely, communication.  This proven system provides a lens through which we can understand ourselves and others better, thereby increasing our emotional intelligence and our ability to achieve greater results.

Understanding the Difference Between Certification and Certificate Programs  and How Financial Literacy Certificates Can Advance Your Career
Onsite Presentation
  • Danielle Sadighi, American Medical Certification Association
  • John White, Champion College Services
According to a report by Credentialing Engine, more than 6700 different certifications are currently awarded to millions of workers. In all, more than 43 million Americans hold a professional certification. Certifications are attestations of their holder's ability to perform a set of skills relevant to a professional setting. The US Department of Education’s Audit Training and Education Survey confirmed a strong correlation between certification and earnings. Understanding certification and stackable certificates focus, hiring patterns, rapidly changing labor market and need for skill-based works will drive the need for your organization to offer stackable credentials. One of the hottest stackable credentials is in Financial Literacy. Employers have stated that they not only want a skill-based professional, but an employer that wants to be personally accountable. Attempts to Expand Owner Liability:  The Program Participation Agreement and Beyond
Onsite Presentation
  • Sean Beller, Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville PC
  • Nicolas Michiels, Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville PC
The Program Participation Agreement allows institutions to participate in the Title IV programs, but it also can impose limits on institutions.  This session will address these limitations, and cover some of the PPA terms no one reads – but should!  Also, Title IV liabilities are an institutional responsibility, right?  Maybe not, as the Department is exploring avenues to impute these liabilities to individual or corporate owners.  Requiring owners to sign the PPA is one such avenue, but what are other potential current or proposed methods for imposing liabilities on owners?  Two experienced higher education attorneys will lead a discussion about these emerging issues.

Compliance with CRM – Ensuring regulated student communication across 15 campuses, 3 states & 2 time zones
Pre-recorded Presentation Available in Convention Portal
  • Shubh Mishra, LeadSquared
  • Joy McClure, Tricoci University of Beauty Culture
  • Paul Matylonek, Tricoci University of Beauty Culture
There are several acts and laws regulating for-profit private postsecondary education for the protection of schools and students.  This scrutiny, however, mandates that a standardized and compliant communication structure between schools and their prospective students exist during the admissions, financial aid and enrollment processes.  The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requires security when it comes to document and information exchange as an example. Measures should be in place to create a system of check and balances if any claim is made about governmental compliance to check the legitimacy of that claim.  Joy, Chief Admissions Officer, and Paul, Director of Admissions Training and Development at Tricoci University of Beauty Culture will share with you how their organization adjusted to governmental compliance across 15 campuses, 3 states and 2 time zones as their school moved to remote work during the COVID pandemic.

Cybersecurity and Data Protection Issues
Onsite Presentation
  • Brandon Sherman, Maynard Cooper
  • Roger Swartzwelder, Maynard Cooper
  • Sarah Glover, Maynard Cooper
The challenges of securing an institution’s data systems and protecting critical information regarding students, employees and business operations, including personally identifiable information, increase every year.  Efforts to breach these systems and take control of an institution’s data happen with growing frequency and too often are successful, and risks to institutions that fail to take the necessary steps to protect their systems and data are high.  This session will discuss evolving trends, current requirements, the cybersecurity risk landscape facing institutions of higher learning, and best practices in cybersecurity and data protection, including new requirements imposed by the U.S. Department of Education as a condition for continued access to Federal Student Aid information. This session will also discuss the role of an institution’s leadership in overseeing its information security program.

The HEERF compliance audit is required to be conducted in accordance with the recently published audit guide. In this presentation, officials with the Office of General Counsel and the OIG non-Federal audit team will provide an overview of the audit guide, including general background, planning considerations, required testing, and due dates and submission procedures.
