Deriaus is a single father to two beautiful children. He decided he needed to set an example for his children. He enrolled in the Expanded Functions Dental Assistant program (EFDA) at All-State Career Baltimore. “I decided to pursue my education because I wanted to show my kids that once you set your mind to something, anything is possible,” Deriaus shared. Becoming a Dental Assistant would be his foundation to pursuing his other goal of becoming a Dental Hygienist.
During his time as a student, Deriaus obtained a part-time job as a Federal Work- Study. He worked hard in the classroom, worked his part time job, and took care of his two children all while maintaining a 3.84 GPA. “There were days I wanted to just give up. But, I set a goal for myself and I needed to make sure to follow through. I did not want to go back to the same life I had before school. That life needed to stay in the past and I had to remember to look forward to a better life and future for me and my family.” Deriaus completed the Dental Assistant program in March 2018. He also passed the DANB (Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.) to obtain his X-ray certification. The good news continued to roll in for Deriaus. His externship site offered an opportunity to start his new career as an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant. Comments are closed.
