Assist former students who are having difficulty repaying their loans

Even after students leave school (hopefully as graduates), you can assist them with student loan questions. While your students have lenders, they most likely don’t have a personal relationship with anyone at the lending institution. On the other hand, they’ve probably met you several times.

If you have a full-time staff member dedicated to default prevention, he or she should contact all borrowers at the grace period mid-point, reminding them that payment will start soon. That staff member can also call borrowers who are delinquent on student loan payments (see reports from lenders and guarantors), offering guidance about how to get back on track financially.

Even if you don’t have a lot of extra time or money, let current students know you will be available in the future—and contact borrowers who withdraw (preferably during their grace period, but especially if they are delinquent).
