Frequently Asked Questions About APSCUPAC
What is APSCUPAC?
APSCUPAC is the Association of Private Sector Colleges and
Univeristies' political action committee. Its purpose is to raise money
from the APSCU community and make contributions to political committees
and federal candidates for elected office.
Why is APSCUPAC needed?
APSCUPAC is part of a three-faceted APSCU political strategy to
compliment the day-to-day lobbying on Capitol Hill by APSCU professional
staff, and APSCU's constituency-based lobbying program. This approach
provides additional opportunities to meet with members of Congress who
are in a position to make a difference on legislation important to our
community.
Is contributing to APSCUPAC voluntary?
Yes. Each APSCU member determines if he or she wishes to
participate.
Who is eligible to contribute to APSCUPAC?
Federal election laws prohibit candidates for federal office
from receiving corporate campaign contributions. Therefore, PAC's which
contribute to candidates for federal office must not accept
contributions from corporations. Contributions to APSCUPAC may only be
solicited from the stockholders, executives, and administrative
personnel (and their families) of member of APSCU. The donations must be
from the individuals rather than the corporations.
What is a "Permission Authorization Form"?
Contributing to APSCUPAC is a two-step process. A "Permission
Authorization Form" is the form where a corporation indicates a
specified group of stockholders, executives and administrative personnel
who are allowed to be solicited by APSCUPAC for contributions for a
specific period of time. The
APSCUPAC must be in receipt of this form prior to soliciting and
accepting contributions. Download the Permission Authorization
Form in PDF format.
Once permission has been given for APSCUPAC to make requests,
how does APSCUPAC raise money?
Direct mail, APSCUPAC sponsored fund-raising events, and
personal phone solicitation are three methods that are employed.
How much may I contribute to APSCUPAC?
An individual contributor may give up to $5,000 per calendar
year to the APSCUPAC. Contributions to APSCUPAC are not tax
deductible.
What are the forms of payment that APSCUPAC will accept?
A personal check or personal credit card -- MasterCard,
American Express, and Visa are the only forms of payment that APSCUPAC
will accept.
How much can the APSCUPAC contribute to candidates?
Because APSCU pays the administrative overhead for the PAC, all
of your contribution goes directly to support federal candidates and
committees. Federal election law limits the amount that a PAC may
contribute to a candidate to a total of $5000 in the primary election
cycle and $5000 during each general election.
